Sketch + Physical Appreciation
“Becoming” the Work Appreciation
This is a complex program in which you can "become" the lines you have drawn via “Art Appreciation Through Drawing” — looking at the picture while drawing it, along with “Art Appreciation with the Body for Parents and Kids” class— appreciating the picture with your body and trying to "become" the drawn lines themselves. In this program, participants are challenged to capture the shape and movement of a work of art by moving the pen and their bodies.

In the first half of the session, you look carefully at the work, and draw the object three times, each time for one minute. You must keep your eyes on the artwork and not look at your drawing. In addition, you have to draw it in one unbroken line. The point here is not to draw well. What is important is to sketch what you see, and "copy" your eye movements onto your sketch. (The rules are designed to allow you to enjoy drawing, not to create good drawings.)
After you have completed all three sketches, show your drawings to a partner and share your feelings. This allows you to organize your thoughts, understand your partner's perspective, and "re-appreciate" each other's points of appreciation.
After a break, the second half of our session will begin with physical expression. First, we need to warm up to relax our bodies and make them capable of becoming various things. We will then play with transforming ourselves into animals, fire, water, weather, and scenery. Finally, we will all try to "become" a painting.
Once your body and mind are sufficiently relaxed, try to "become" the line you have just drawn. While being observed by your partner, you try to transform your body into the shape you want, and then your partner has a turn. How can you become the line? What is your partner trying to convey? The fun of this work lies in the unseen, in the connection between the desire to communicate and the desire to understand.
For the final project, the group will try to "become" a work of art by combining their individual body expressions. By combining the expressions of the lines, we will once again create a work of art ... but is it really possible? If the viewer succeeds in becoming the work of art, then perhaps the ‘eye’ that made this possible is what was cultivated through appreciation.
